The New Godmother

The Godmothers have been serving the Detroit Metropolitan community since 1999. Our projects are as diverse as the women who have volunteered and supported us over the years. A big "thank you" goes out to the women who first pioneered this little grass roots group, the first board of directors, and the women that shared the same vision. Thank you to all the individuals who are/ have volunteered significant time and energy, like Shelly A., who set-up the Godmothers' website and to Julie P. who maintains it. Plus those who help our on going Christmas program that literally touches the lives of hundreds of families during the holiday season year after year.

We have also been able to change lives, from moving families out of shelters, working directly with children's organizations, women's shelters, animal rescue groups, senior centers, mentally challenged adults, to sponsoring picnics and Christmas parties for adults and children .

We were able to send a group of women to Katrina victims with thousands of dollars of food and supplies, plus we helped Haven after it burned down. We've done small things as well, such as paying a person's rent who was about to be homeless. Two months later, the money was repaid to the Godmothers and used to help others. In addition, we've paid for mammograms, heating bills, prescription drugs and food.

Not only have we touched lives and changed lives and gave hundreds of people hope over the years, we've also served as a networking group in the GLB Community. People have made long lasting friendships and found partners through our activities. I've personally met some of the nicest people on this planet and couldn't imagine my life without them in it. So many women and not enough time or words could I find to thank each and every one of you!

IT IS TIME TO GIVE BACK
Over the last couple of years it's become more and more evident that the very women that have supported us, might need our help. Many lives have been touched or lost to cancer, chronic illnesses, accidents or medical emergencies. We have lost many dear friends supporters and volunteers and witnessed great suffering from partners, family and friends.

The time has come for The Godmothers to change our focus and mission statement. The New Godmothers will support a ''We Care Program'' for the health and well being of women living in the METRO DETROIT AREA.                      

Our new mission is to help brighten the spirits and help ease the recovery of women suffering from cancer, chronic disabling diseases, and link uninsured or underinsured people with information to obtain free mammogram's.

In the near future we want to provide HOSPITAL/HOME CARE PACKAGES such as:
Lip balm to moisten lips parched from chemotherapy treatments or dry hospital air gum or mints to freshen a dry mouth

A knit hat for the chemo patient who lost their hair, cozy slippers with non-slip soles, home made cozy blankets (made by seniors from a nursing home who want to help others and "give back"

A warm robe or soft pajamas gift certificates for restaurants, gas stations and local store

Entertainment package: Patients get bored when they are in the hospital or home for long periods of time. Books, music, and movies that can be viewed on a portable DVD player help pass the time. For someone that has a long-term illness, we may consider giving a subscription to an online video rental service such as Netflix or Blockbuster and restaurant gift certificates.

An appointment for pampering. Although the patient may not be able to use it immediately, a gift certificate for a massage, a new hairstyle, or a spa service provides something to look forward to after recovery. Some salons and spas will go to the patient to provide these services, which we can provide. Also, if needed, we can donate a certificate for a wig.
Helping hands. Volunteers will donate time to help with the upkeep of general household duties such as picking up groceries, caring for pets, cutting the lawn, snow removal etc.
Concierge services. A gift certificate to a concierge service that runs errands, offers transportation, delivers groceries, cooks, and does housekeeping.

Mammogram's - Provide information and access to women who can't afford a mammogram or do not have insurance.

None of this is written in stone. We want your ideas and input. Let us know if you would like to volunteer for The New Godmother's Program, be on the board of directors, help with fund raisers, donate, or have an idea for a corporate sponsor! In the future, the proceeds from every event and fundraiser will be going back to OUR COMMUITY OF WOMEN AND SUPPORTERS!

NEED FOR HELP!
Our Christmas program is the biggest project that we do all year. We help people out in our community that are in need during the Holiday Season. Every year there seems to be more and more people in need that would otherwise go without the joy of Christmas.
